Deshaun Watson Contract Talks With Houston Texans Hit An Apparent Roadblock

It was no surprise that Houston Texans Deshaun Watson came in at number 20 in this year’s NFL Top 100 list. The former Clemson Tigers quarterback has been a revelation since making his NFL debut in 2017. He’s led the Texans to two consecutive winning seasons in the league as they are now one of the top teams in the AFC South Division.

In the last two years, the former Heisman Trophy runner-up has managed to throw for almost 8,000 yards. He completed 42 TDs in 2018 and 2019 against 21 interceptions. He is expected to pick up where he left when the season starts in the coming weeks.

Deshaun Watson contract extension talks put on hold amid preseason training

ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler spoke about the ongoing contract talks between Watson’s agent and the Texans’ executives.

“And it’s possible the structure of that Patrick Mahomes 12-year, $500 million deal complicates matters a bit, because Watson’s going to want a much shorter, very different contract. And so expect some pressure to apply around Week 1. This should get done, but there’s not been a lot of momentum just yet,” Fowler said via Bleacher Report.

Watson signed a $13.84 million contract including an $8.21 million signing bonus back in 2017. He has two more years left on his current deal but will be hoping to wrap up contract talks ASAP so he can focus on the upcoming season.

The Texans begin their 2020 season with a challenging encounter against defending Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs. Watson will be working hard in order to bag a big-money extension with the Houston-based franchise next year. The Texans, on their part, will be eager to nail down their star performer on a long-term deal in order to secure their future.
